Two Santa Ana men were killed when their car hit the concrete center divider of the Orange Freeway, slid through four lanes of southbound traffic, spun out of control, then came to a stop when it struck a tree, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said Monday.

CHP spokesman Matt Clark identified the men killed shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday as Ricardo Guzman, 21, and Jose Luis Cruz, 20, who was driving the Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

They were pronounced dead at the scene, Clark said, adding that it appeared that both were under the influence of alcohol.

Two passengers in the car were treated at Brea Community Hospital for minor injuries, Clark said.

Clark said a witness told the CHP that the men were following his car too closely just north of Birch Street when Cruz abruptly changed lanes, then hit the center divider.

Cruz’s car did not strike any other vehicles as it bounced back through the four lanes of traffic and eventually hit the tree.
