Bassi Leaves UCSD to Coach Softball at Fullerton College

Lisa Bassi will leave as co-coach of the UC San Diego softball team to become coach at Fullerton College.
Bassi, 27, and Lin Adams took over the UCSD program two years ago and coached the Tritons to two consecutive National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division III national tournaments. UCSD was 35-9 and ranked No. 2 in the country last season.
Bassi replaces Margo Davis, who resigned after 31 years at Fullerton.
TENNIS
Ros Fairbank of San Diego defeated Akemi Nishiya of Japan, 6-0, 6-3 to advance to the second round of the Virginia Slims grass-court women’s tennis tournament at Edgbaston, England.
San Diego’s Hu Na was ousted in the second round by Zina Garrison of Houston, 6-3, 6-4.
BOXING
Welterweight Sergei Karavaev won a 3-0 decision over Larry Dixon of San Diego Tuesday as the Soviet Union and U.S. amateur boxing teams tied 5-5 at Orlando, Fla.
