Tai Babilonia, former Olympic figure skater, is coming out of retirement and will perform with her partner, Randy Gardner, today in Richard Porter’s Celebration on Ice at Bally’s Grand Opera House in Atlantic City, N.J. Babilonia, 29, is coming back from a suicide attempt prompted by alcohol and drug addiction.
The team of Babilonia and Gardner won the pairs title in the World Figure Skating Championships in 1979, and was favored to win the Olympic gold in 1980. However, a groin injury to Gardner forced them to drop out of the Lake Placid Games.
Afterward, they turned professional and skated in the Ice Capades. Babilonia retired in 1988, and later revealed her problems with alcohol and diet pills.
