Tennis Roundup : Chang Gets Knocked Off by Kriek, 1-6, 7-6, 6-4

Michael Chang got a quick lesson on the ups and downs of professional tennis.

Chang, who won the French Open on Sunday, was beaten by Johan Kriek, 1-6, 7-6, 6-4, Wednesday in the round-robin Continental Grass Court Championships at Rosmalen, Netherlands.

The 17-year-old Chang became the first American to win the French Open since 1955 by defeating Sweden’s Stefan Edberg last Sunday.

Mats Wilander, struggling to regain the form that made him No. 1 in the world earlier this year, beat David Wheaton, 7-6 (10-8), 2-6, 6-3, in the second round of the Queens Club grass-court championships at London.

In other matches, Pete Sampras upset fifth-seeded Kevin Curren, 6-3, 6-3, top-seeded Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia trounced Australian Mark Kratzmann, 6-2, 6-3, in 73 minutes, Chris Bailey of England downed 18-year-old Venezuelan Nicolas Pereira, 6-3, 7-6, and Tim Wilkison ousted fourth-seeded Tim Mayotte, 6-3, 7-6 (11-9).

Pam Shriver, who has been pondering retirement recently, was knocked off by Ann Henricksson, 7-6 (10-8), 7-5, in the third round of a Virginia Slims tournament at Edgbaston, England.

“I don’t have a lot of ambition,” Shriver said. “I’m questioning the values of it and don’t know how much I want to play, if at all.”

In other matches, second-seeded Zina Garrison struggled past 11th-seeded Kathy Rinaldi, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1, Betsy Nagelsen defeated Sophie Amiach of France, 6-3, 6-4, and 12th-seeded Elna Reinach of South Africa beat seventh-seeded Anne Minter of Australia, 6-1, 6-3.

John McEnroe, continuing his build-up for Wimbledon, scored a 6-3, 6-1 victory over unranked qualifier Ross Matheson of Scotland in the first round of the Scottish grass-court championships at Edinburgh, Scotland.

“I felt fine, the court was a bit soft but it was just the sort of first- round match I needed,” said McEnroe, who had trouble with the Scot’s serve in the first set.

In another first-round match, Vitas Gerulaitis, who recently came out of retirement, beat David Felgate of Britain, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4.

Top-seeded Guillermo Perez Roldan beat fellow Argentine Gabriel Markus, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round of an international tournament at Bologna, Italy.

In other matches, fourth-seeded Ronald Agenor of Argentina ousted Raoul Viver of Ecuador, 6-4, 6-1, and Roberto Azar of Argentina eliminated Andres Vysand of the Soviet Union, 6-3, 6-2.
