L.A. Games Roundup : Taft Displays Balanced Attack in 82-35 Victory

Six Taft High players scored in double figures as the Toreadors defeated Western Christian, 82-35, Saturday in a first-round boys’ basketball game at Dorsey High.

Jason Deyoe, a 6-8 junior center, had 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the Toreadors, and teammate Kenny Collins had 11 points and a game-high 13 assists.

Tomi Egardo (11 points), Brandon Bryce (10) and Casey Sheehan (10) added to Taft’s balanced attack.

The Toreadors will play Artesia in the second round at 11 a.m. today.

In other first-round basketball games:

Burroughs 63, Mission Viejo 57--Ramon Velasquez scored a game-high 24 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead Burroughs in the first-round game at El Camino College.

Doug Castaneda added 14 points for the Indians, who will play Long Beach Poly in a second-round game at 11 a.m. today at El Camino College.

Hart 56, Serra 38--Junior Micah Ohlman scored a game-high 24 points--including five three-point baskets--for Hart in the first-round game at Fremont High.

Junior Chad Fotheringham added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Hart and teammates Renato Rivas and Mali Moye each added six rebounds for Hart, which will play Santa Monica in a second-round game at Fremont at 10 a.m. today.

Camarillo 61, Hollywood 37--David Harbour scored a game-high 25 points and Scott Foster added 15 for Camarillo in the first-round game at Crenshaw High.

The Scorpions, co-Marmonte League champions with Simi Valley this season, will play Rubidoux in a second-round game at Crenshaw High at 10 a.m. today.

Marina 65, Thousand Oaks 47--Mike Sandlin scored a team-high 16 points for Thousand Oaks in the first-round game at El Camino College.

Chris Loll added 11 points and Dusty Lysobey had six rebounds for Thousand Oaks.

Keppel 47, Monroe 45--With the score tied, 45-45, Keppel forced a Monroe turnover that led to the winning basket with less than a minute remaining.

Cleveland 49, Santa Ana Valley 23--Stifling defense propelled the Cavaliers to victory. Cleveland will plays San Fernando, a 51-30 winner over Santa Ynez, in a second-round game today at noon at El Camino College.

BASEBALL

Thousand Oaks 11, San Fernando 4--Jason Goldstein hit a two-run home run in the second inning and Brent Christenson hit a bases-loaded triple in the first and an RBI double in the fourth to help Thousand Oaks to an early lead in the first-round game at Grant High.

Right-hander Mike Lee pitched 5 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win. Thousand Oaks catcher David Skeels had two singles and two runs batted in.

Thousand Oaks will play Duarte, a forfeit winner over Culver City, in a second-round game at Grant at 9 a.m. today.

Chatsworth 4, Oxnard 1--Left-hander Dennis Emslie retired the first 10 batters he faced and finished with a complete-game three-hitter for Chatsworth in the first-round game at Grant High.

Mario McLean hit a two-run home run over the right-field fence in the third inning for Chatsworth to break a scoreless tie. Rodney Bloom singled in the fifth to score Tommy Lee with Chatsworth’s final run.

Chatsworth will play Huntington Beach in a second-round game today at noon at Grant.

Alemany 7, Katella 3--Alemany plays Ocean View, a 13-4 winner over Westchester, in a second-round game today at 9 a.m. at Redondo High.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Chaminade 3, Corona del Mar 1--Carla Coppa, Courtney Ikemori and Natalie Dill each scored for Chaminade in the first-round match at El Camino College.

Chaminade will play Ventura in a quarterfinal match at El Camino at 1:15 p.m. today.

Royal 4, Westlake 0--Nicki Noyes scored two goals in the first half and the Highlanders’ Staci Blough and Amy Burns added a goal each after intermission in the first-round match at El Camino College.

Royal will play Hawthorne, a 1-0 winner over Los Altos, in a quarterfinal match at El Camino at 11:30 a.m. today
