Richard Rush, dean of San Diego State University’s North County center since 1984, has been named executive vice president of Cal State San Marcos by the university’s president, Bill Stacy.

Rush, who did not apply for the president’s job at the new university, has been widely credited for the growth and success of the North County SDSU campus, which serves nearly 2,000 students in leased buildings.

Rush was the first appointment made by Stacy, who was named president by trustees of the California State University system last week. Rush had been named to the post on an interim basis previously by CSU officials while they conducted their search for the president.

Rush was an English literature professor at SDSU for nine years until 1980, when he left the San Diego campus to pursue real estate and consulting work. He returned to SDSU in 1984 to run the North County center.

Stacy said he named Rush as executive vice president because of his familiarity with the community and his successful work in developing the SDSU satellite center and tending to the initial administrative needs of the new university, including budgeting and campus planning.
