A federal judge rejected a wide-ranging request for classified government documents by former National Security Adviser John M. Poindexter, directing the ex-official to “reformulate and limit his demands.” Poindexter, who is due to stand trial later this year on charges of obstructing Congress and making false statements in the Iran-Contra affair, had filed a 64-page request earlier this month for voluminous materials, including notebooks, diaries and other documents relating to President Bush and former President Ronald Reagan. But U.S. District Judge Harold H. Greene noted that prosecutors recently announced they were scaling back their case against Poindexter to minimize the need for classified information.
