Horse Racing Roundup : Private Terms Survives Foul Claim in Massachusetts ‘Cap Victory

Private Terms, the beaten favorite in the 1988 Kentucky Derby, survived a foul claim to win the $300,000 Massachusetts Handicap by three-quarters of a length Saturday at Suffolk Downs in Revere, Mass.

A 7-5 favorite after setting a Pimlico track record May 27, Private Terms outdueled fast-closing Granacus in the 55th running of New England’s richest race.

Simply Majestic, winner of five straight stakes, led most of the way and held on for third.

Jockey Jim McAleny, aboard Granacus, a 7-1 shot, claimed that his mount was interfered with by Private Terms, ridden by Kent Desormeaux, in the stretch. Track stewards disallowed the foul claim.

The time for the 1 1/8-mile, Grade II event was 1:49 2/5.

Private Terms earned $180,000. Private Terms paid $4.80, $3.40 and $2.20. Granacus paid $5.40 and $3; Simply Majestic returned $2.40.

Cryptoclearance won the $509,550 Hawthorne Gold Cup for the second consecutive year.

Cryptoclearance, ridden by Jose Santos, ran the 1 1/4 miles in 2:00 2/5 to win by 1 1/4 lengths and earn $305,730. The entry of Cryptoclearance and Lustra paid $4.00, $2.20, and $2.10.

Proper Reality returned $2.20 and $2.10; Classic Account paid $2.10.

Dancing Spree surged from last to first in the six-horse field to win the True North Handicap at Belmont Park by 3 3/4 lengths.

Dancing Spree, ridden by Angel Cordero, covered six furlongs in 1:09 2/5 and paid $4.20, $3 and $2.20. Dr. Carrington paid $5.40 and $3.60. Pok Ta Pok returned $3.

Some Romance battled Divine Answer through the stretch and won the Post-Deb Stakes by a neck at Monmouth Park.

Some Romance, owned by Gene Klein, returned $3.20, $2.60 and $2.20.
