WORLD : Arafat Has Unscheduled China Stop
Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat flew to Vietnam en route to Cambodia today after an emergency landing and unscheduled 18-hour stopover in Beijing, a PLO spokesman said.
“The chairman arrived in Hanoi this minute,” PLO spokesman Ahmed Abdel Rahman said by telephone. “I just spoke to him on the telephone. He is 100% safe.” Abdel Rahman said Arafat’s chartered airplane made an “emergency landing” in Beijing because of “aviation problems” while en route from North Korea to Cambodia, but the nature of the problem was not specified.
