Cleveland Job Still Vacant, Principal Says

Cleveland High Principal Ida Mae Windham on Tuesday denied a published report that a successor has been named to replace basketball Coach Bob Braswell and said that a decision will not be made until Thursday or later.

Despite reports that Braswell had announced as his successor St. Bernard High assistant coach Marc Paez, Windham said she expects to interview at least three more candidates before making a decision. Braswell resigned this month after four years at Cleveland to become an assistant at Cal State Long Beach.

Windham said that she interviewed Paez on Monday and that he is the front-runner for the job but stopped short of saying an offer was tendered.

“He seems to be a good candidate, but we haven’t even completed the interview process yet,” Windham said. “His hiring is not, by any means, confirmed.”

The New York Mets on Tuesday recalled catcher Phil Lombardi, a former Kennedy High standout, from triple-A Tidewater of the International League. Lombardi replaces catcher Barry Lyons, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Lyons, who has been filling in for the injured Gary Carter, fractured his right big toe Monday night when he was hit by a foul ball in the Mets’ 5-1 loss to the Expos.

Lombardi, a 1981 graduate of Kennedy, was batting .264 with eight homers and 46 RBIs in 73 games with Tidewater.

Cal State Northridge will have to wait at least two more weeks before it learns the results of a feasibility study on a proposed on-campus indoor arena.

The Ogden Corp., a New York-based conglomerate that expressed interest in a cooperative effort with the school on construction, has told CSUN officials that it is in the final stages of its report.

Northridge had hoped to have the study by the first of this month.

Julie Tingle of Agoura High will attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the fall and try to make the track team as a walk-on.

Tingle was the Southern Section 1-A Division champion in the 300-meter low hurdles.

Marion Jones of the West Valley Eagles track club set a national age-group record for 12- to 13-year-olds when she won the 200 meters in 24.30 seconds in the West Coast Classic meet at UC Irvine on Sunday. Jones, 13, broke the mark of 24.91 set by Angela Burnham in 1985. She also won the 100 in a personal best of 12.02.

Burnham won five state titles at Rio Mesa High during her career, including 100 and 200 titles in each of the past two years.
