East Germany today angrily denied the charge that it feeds performance-enhancing drugs to top athletes and said the East German defector who had alleged this faced an inquiry for trying to dope ski jumpers.

East German sports sources said there are isolated but unpublicized cases of soccer players, track and field stars and even trainers or doctors--like defector Hans-Georg Aschenbach--being caught by increasingly tough domestic anti-doping tests.

Aschenbach, a former Olympic ski-jumping champion, has alleged in the West German newspaper Bild that athletes take drugs from childhood and that all stars have to use them.

Others become mental or physical wrecks through too much training, he said in another Bild article today.
