The San Francisco-Shanghai Sister City Committee announced it is suspending ties with the Chinese city because of the violent suppression of the pro-democracy movement. A letter written by Walter Fong, the committee’s co-chairman and head of the local Chinese Chamber of Commerce, said the recent events in Beijing “shocked and saddened” San Franciscans. It said that Mayor Art Agnos wanted the Shanghai government to know that future sister-city contacts would be evaluated by determining if they would enhance democracy in China. In practical terms, the decision means an August trade show in San Francisco with Shanghai is canceled.
