The 13th Maccabiah Games opened as 4,350 Jewish athletes from 44 countries marched in the ceremonies near Tel Aviv.
The games torch was lighted by Hanoch Budin, a 1988 Paralympic gold medalist.
The American delegation of 502 athletes, the second largest at the games, includes 1988 Olympians Ken Flax, a hammer thrower, and Sherri Cassuto, a rower.
