Americans Calvin Smith and Roger Kingdom overcame cold, windy conditions for victories in the International Grand Prix track and field meet at Edinburgh, Scotland.

Smith, who defeated Olympic champion Carl Lewis in Oslo last week, became the first man this season to beat Olympic silver medalist Linford Christie of Britain, winning the 100 meters in 10.42 seconds.

Kingdom, a two-time Olympic champion, edged Greg Foster in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 13.31.

“That was my best race of the year,” Kingdom said, “and it was so cold all I wanted to do was finish as quickly as I could.”

Tim Simon passed fellow American Steve Lewis, the Olympic 400-meter champion, in the last five meters to win in 45.21.

Mike Powell of the United States won the long jump with a first-round leap of 26 feet 11 1/4 inches. The only challenge came from Larry Myricks, who went 26-8 1/4 on his last jump to finish second.
