Despite two bomb blasts this week near Mecca’s Grand Mosque, hundreds of thousands of Muslims from 80 countries ascended Saudi Arabia’s Mt. Arafat as part of the annual pilgrimage to Islam’s holiest city. Police, meanwhile, searched for terrorists responsible for the two blasts that killed one person and wounded 16. Saudi King Fahd arrived to supervise the pilgrimage, or hajj, in the wake of the explosions. Fahd has been assuring Arab and Islamic leaders that the kingdom will ensure the safety of the pilgrims, after 1987 riots by Iranian pilgrims left 402 dead. Saudi papers charged that Iran was behind the bombings Monday.
