One of USC’s top football recruits, quarterback Curtis Conway of Hawthorne High School, has failed to reach the required Scholastic Aptitude Test score of 700 in five attempts and will not enroll at USC this fall.

Conway, one of the top prep football seniors in the nation last fall and the state 100-meter champion, scored 650 on his final try June 3.

USC has told Conway that it will honor its commitment to him if he passes the test next fall.

Conway says that he plans to enroll as a part-time student in a junior college this fall and not participate in either football or track in order to retain his full athletic eligibility.

“It was shocking when I found out that I had failed,” Conway said.

Conway had enrolled in the Princeton Review, a SAT preparation course.

“I just did not go to the classes as much as I should have been going,” he said. “I knew that it was important for me to pass but for personal reasons, I did not take the time. I was just lazy about the situation.

“My whole senior year there was just a lot of commotion with school, recruiting, football, track, the SAT’s and my personal life. When I took the tests I was over my head.”
