Tennis Roundup : Strings Beat Charlotte in Overtime of Opener, 28-24

The doubles team of John Lloyd and Roger Smith defeated Larry Stefanki and Sherwood Stewart in the first game of overtime to give the Los Angeles Strings a 28-24 victory in their TeamTennis opener against the Charlotte Heat Thursday night at Charlotte, N.C.

Lloyd and Smith lost to Stefanki and Stewart, 6-5, in the last set, setting up overtime before a crowd of 4,572.

Lloyd teamed with Lise Gregory to beat Stewart and Cynthia McGregory in mixed doubles.

In singles, Smith downed Stefanki, 6-5, and Anne Minter turned back Cammy McGregor, 6-4.

Top-seeded Andre Agassi had smooth sailing, but second-seeded Mats Wilander had to survive a third-round challenge to reach the quarterfinals of the U.S. Pro Tennis Championships at Brookline, Mass.

Agassi had everything his way in a 6-1, 6-2 win over South African Barry Moir. Wilander, winning the crucial points at every juncture, squeezed past 15th-seeded Jimmy Arias, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Martin Jaite of Argentina upset fifth-seeded Guillermo Perez-Roldan, also of Argentina, 6-3, 6-3.

In other matches, Eduardo Bengoechea of Argentina eliminated Phil Johnson, 6-4, 6-4; fourth-seeded Jay Berger downed No. 11 Fernando Luna of Spain, 6-3, 6-2, and No. 6 Andres Gomez of Ecuador outlasted Broderick Dyke of Australia, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).

No. 7 Jaime Yzaga of Peru defeated No. 10 Lawson Duncan, 6-4, 6-2, and No. 8 Jordi Arrese of Spain beat West Germany’s Karsten Braasch, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).

Jim Grabb won the second-set tiebreaker, 7-3, en route to a 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory over Brad Gilbert in the first round of the Gunze World tournament at Yokohama, Japan.

In first-round women’s matches, Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina routed Helen Kelesi of Canada, 6-0, 6-3, and Miyagi Nana of Japan downed Halle Cioffi, 6-2, 6-3.

Unseeded Glenn Layendecker upset top-seeded Paul Annacone, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-0), and advanced to the semifinals of the $155,000 Volvo-Hall of Fame championships at Newport, R.I.

No. 2-seeded Johan Kriek also was eliminated, losing, 6-3, 6-2, to South African Danie Visser, who advanced to the semifinals.

In second-round play, Jim Pugh defeated Matt Anger, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5, and John Fitzgerald of Australia beat Brian Garrow, 6-3, 6-3.

Udo Riglewski of West Germany reached the quarterfinals of the $305,000 Swiss Open by outlasting third-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, at Gstaad, Switzerland.

No. 2 Aaron Krickstein beat unseeded Martin Strelba of Czechoslovakia, 6-2, 6-3.

Carl Uwe Steeb lof West Germany, ranked 28th in the world, defeated Cassio Motta of Brazil, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (11-9).
