Syrian and Christian gunners battled with howitzers and mortars around Beirut as rival Shiite Muslim militias fought in the Lebanese capital’s southern slums. The state electricity authority imposed a blackout in Beirut and in the 310-square-mile Christian enclave northeast of the city after it ran out of fuel for its main generating plant. Police said one person was killed and at least 19 were wounded in the artillery duels. Another person was killed and four were wounded in a four-hour fire fight between the pro-Syrian Amal militia and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, or Party of God, police added.
