From Times wire services
PETERBOROUGH, Ont. — Bob Gainey, captain of the Montreal Canadiens, confirmed today that he has signed a two-year contract to be a player-coach with the Epinal Ecureuils, a second division hockey club in France.
The announcement, to be made officially this afternoon in Montreal, ends weeks of speculation surrounding the future of the 35-year-old Peterborough native.
“As a player, I’ll be expected to be the team’s dominant player on the ice,” Gainey told the Peterborough Examiner in an interview from his parents’ home before leaving for Montreal.
