Harpist Maria Casale of North Hollywood will perform a recital March 13 in Lincoln Center in New York City as a result of winning the gold medal at the U.S.A. International Harp competition in Bloomington, Ind. Casale, 26, led an American sweep of the top three places. Elizabeth Hainen, 22, of Toledo, Ohio, took second place, and Kirsten Agresta, 19, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., a harp major at Indiana University’s School of Music, placed third. Thirty-seven contestants from 14 nations competed at Indiana University in the first such event held in the United States in 20 years. The competition is scheduled to take place in Bloomington in 1992 and every three years thereafter. As part of her prize, Casale also received a concert harp valued at more than $17,000.
