Two Big Stripers Caught at River
Bullhead City, on the Arizona side of the Colorado River, is known for yielding small striped bass, but two local residents recently proved that big stripers can be caught there as well.
Dave Cherry landed a 34-pound striper while Michael Gaskewy caught a 25-pounder.
LAKE MEAD--Striped bass best in lower basin. Anchovies working at 40-70 feet. Some surface action in Vegas Wash. Fish from two to nine pounds. Catfish--most under three pounds--biting in coves in evenings. Largemouth bass slow.
LAKE HAVASU--Stripers biting on surface lures throughout lake, the larger fish, to six pounds, biting in mornings off points or in river. Anchovies at 45. Largemouth bass slow, best in mornings and evenings. Catfish picking up, averaging two- to five pounds, biting best in deep water. Most baits working.
BULLHEAD CITY--Striped bass bite very good in river. Trout also biting on river, with Berkley Power Bait working best.
SALTON SEA--Orangemouth corvina best at Red Hill, but good catches at Bombay and Niland marina. Live baits best bet. Croaker good on west and north ends. Flathead catfish upwards of 30 pounds biting in Alamo River. Heavy tackle necessary due to strong current.
LAKE CACHUMA--Trout providing most action, biting at dam. Trollers using seven colors and needlefish lure. Yellow Power Bait, cheese and nightcrawlers. Crappie picking up, biting best at Jackrabbit Flats on red and white mini-jigs. Catfish biting best in backs of bays in shallows. Mackerel best bet. Red ear perch fair. Tony Burke, 12, Ojai, 3-8 perch (new lake record).
CASITAS LAKE--Catfish biting in shallows, with mackerel working best. George Collier, Oxnard, six catfish, 35 pounds. Trout biting at 40 feet, some to 2 1/2 pounds. Most baits working. Largemouth bass slow.
PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass biting on surface, mainly in marina and channel. Largemouth bass and an occasional smallmouth biting mainly at Yellow Bar and along cliffs. Roy Roberts, Lancaster, 11-pound largemouth and five-pound trout. Trout biting best in marina. Power Bait and nightcrawlers working best. Catfish to 10 pounds biting primarily at dam.
LAKE SILVERWOOD--Striped bass biting best in Cleghorn and Miller canyons, and through channel towards dam. Cliff Whitehead, 18-pound striper, caught in channel. Steve Wilson, Rialto, 18 and 11-pound stripers. Bill Duran, Fontana, 20-pound striper. Catfish biting best in Miller Canyon. Largemouth bass most active off rocky points in channel.
BISHOP AREA--Crowley: Trout fishing rated good, with trollers using four-colors and bait fishermen doing equally well. Sabrina: Trolling flashers with worms and needlefish doing best. Bishop Creek fishermen doing best with Power Bait and salmon eggs. Pleasant Valley dam best in early mornings or late evenings. Some limits reported.
JUNE LAKE AREA--June, Gull and Silver yielding trout between four and six pounds. Silver needlefish, flashers, worms and marshmallows working.
BRIDGEPORT AREA--Bridgeport Reservoir: Mostly rainbows to two pounds. Power Bait and salmon eggs working best, but trollers using green Rapalas catching bigger fish. Lower Twin producing several limits of pan-sized rainbows with an occasional brown to seven pounds.
