San Diego
To combat public drunkenness, a San Diego City Council committee voted Wednesday to tighten restrictions on alcohol sales downtown.
If approved by the full City Council, the ordinance would restrict alcohol sales for off-premises consumption from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., prohibit sale of certain small bottles, and limit stores to 20% of gross revenues from alcohol sales, among other restrictions.
The ordinance has been in force in the Gaslamp Quarter since 1985.
The council’s Public Services and Safety Committee, which supported extension of the ordinance by a 4-0 vote, also instructed City Manager John Lockwood to determine if the law will push public drunkenness problems into adjacent neighborhoods and whether additional legislation is needed.
