THE SIDELINES : Davis Cup Matches Scheduled
MUNICH, West Germany — Last-minute substitute Brad Gilbert will play Carl-Uwe Steeb on Friday in the opening match of the Davis Cup semifinal between the United States and defending champion West Germany.
Boris Becker, who recently won his third Wimbledon title, meets Andre Agassi of the United States in the second match of the best-of-five competition.
The pairings were determined by a draw today.
On Saturday, Americans Ken Flach and Robert Seguso are scheduled to play Becker and Eric Jelen in doubles. Steeb plays Agassi and Becker faces Gilbert in the final two singles matches on Sunday.
Gilbert is replacing John McEnroe, who was forced to pull out of the competition because of a shoulder injury sustained at Wimbledon.
The winner of the U.S.-West Germany series will play the winner of the Sweden-Yugoslavia semifinal for the Davis Cup championship in December.
Meanwhile, it was announced in Bastad, Sweden, today that Stefan Edberg, a losing finalist in both the French Open and Wimbledon, will play doubles only when Sweden plays Yugoslavia on clay in this weekend’s Davis Cup semifinals.
