American League Roundup : Rookie Hits a Winner for Indians
Rookie Joey Belle, brought up from double-A Canton-Akron July 15, broke a seventh-inning tie with a grand slam off Eric Plunk to lead the Indians past the New York Yankees, 7-3, at Cleveland Monday night.
The Indians have won five of six to move from 10 games out to 5 1/2 behind the idle Baltimore Orioles in the American League East. New York has lost seven consecutive games.
Lee Guetterman (2-4) walked Dion James with one out in the seventh and the score tied, 3-3. Joe Carter hit a single and took second on right fielder Jesse Barfield’s throw to third. Pete O’Brien was walked intentionally.
Belle then hit Plunk’s 1-and-1 pitch over the left-field wall for his second home run.
Milwaukee 10, Detroit 0--Chris Bosio pitched a three-hitter over seven innings at Milwaukee as the Brewers handed the Tigers their sixth consecutive loss and 16th in 18 games.
It was Detroit’s 10th shutout this season.
Jack Morris (2-8) lost in his first appearance since May 22. Morris, who was out with chips in his right elbow, gave up nine hits and seven runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Robin Yount extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a run-scoring single in Milwaukee’s three-run first inning, and Greg Brock had three hits.
Chicago 5, Seattle 4--Carlton Fisk hit a two-out single with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to lead the White Sox at Chicago.
Chicago has won nine of its last 10 and nine in a row at Comiskey Park.
Mike Jackson (3-4) walked Dave Gallagher to lead off the ninth. Gallagher took second on a sacrifice and went to third on pitcher Keith Comstock’s throwing error to first.
Harold Baines was intentionally walked to load the bases and reliever Mike Schooler got Ivan Calderon on a popup and struck out Dan Pasqua. Fisk then singled down the right-field line on an 0-and-2 pitch.
Seattle outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. did not play after fracturing his right hand before the game.
Toronto 6, Texas 3--The Blue Jays hit a season-high four home runs to win at Arlington, Tex.
It was not a good night for Wilson Alvarez, 19, of the Rangers, who didn’t get an out in his major league debut.
Alvarez was called up from double-A Tulsa Saturday and moved into the rotation in place of the sore-shouldered Charlie Hough. Alvarez allowed the first five batters to reach base and was removed after giving up, a single, two homers and two walks.
Fred McGriff hit his league-leading 26th homer, Kelly Gruber his 13th, Tony Fernandez his seventh and Manny Lee his first since Aug. 7, 1988.
