The Samuel Goldwyn Foundation has established a $1 million loan and scholarship fund for students at the UCLA School of Medicine. The program has a unique feature: If a student goes on to practice general or family medicine in an underserved area in Southern California or becomes a physician in the U.S. armed forces, principal and interest payments will be forgiven for that period of time. Samuel Goldwyn Jr., son of the Hollywood pioneer and president of the foundation, said that while the loan-scholarship fund assists qualified students, “the real beneficiaries are the needy people of Southern California” who can’t often obtain first-rate medical care. At least five students per academic year will receive up to $15,000 in loans and scholarships.
