Man Found Guilty of Killing His Roommate
A Superior Court jury on Tuesday found a Fountain Valley man guilty of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his roommate.
But Curtis Timothy DeWitt, 36, will not be sentenced for second-degree murder until Judge John Smith can determine whether he was sane at the time of the Sept. 27, 1988, shooting that left Hans Willi Tonert, 55, dead of a .22-caliber bullet wound to the head.
Tonert was pronounced dead in the front yard of his Fountain Valley house in the 9800 block of Petunia Avenue. DeWitt was standing next to the body when police arrived at the scene, according to testimony during the trial in Santa Ana.
