The Bush Administration announced that it will give $2 million in emergency aid to Lebanon but rejected suggestions by Rep. Lee H. Hamilton (D-Ind.) that it send Navy vessels to protect supply shipments against Syrian attack. The aid, requested by the International Red Cross, will include food and medical supplies for victims of the country’s long civil war, which pits Iraqi-backed Christian forces against Syrian-backed Muslim and Druze militias. Assistant Secretary of State for Middle Eastern Affairs John Kelly outlined the aid plan to the House subcommittee on Europe and the Middle East, which Hamilton chairs.
