Monrovia : Judge OKs Rent Hike
A Pasadena Superior Court judge has given the owners of the Park Santa Anita mobile home park the green light to raise rents for the nearly 40 tenants.
Judge Melvin Grover’s July 21 decision nullifies a temporary restraining order blocking the rent increase that the court granted the tenant association in May.
Rents at the park ranged from $180 to $250. The new rate of $350 for all tenants went into effect after Grover’s decision was issued.
The rent increase comes amid a legal battle between the park owners and the city. Because the property owners plan to close the park, they are required to give the city a report on the closure’s impact on tenants. The City Council in February rejected an initial report as inadequate, and adopted an ordinance detailing compensation packages the owners must provide displaced residents.
The owners filed a suit against the city in April, claiming that the amount of compensation required by the ordinance is excessive.
