All-Stars Jackson of Royals, Swindell of Indians Put on 15-Day Disabled List
Two American League All-Stars were put on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday.
They are the Kansas City Royals’ Bo Jackson, the most valuable player in the All-Star game, and left-hander Greg Swindell of the Cleveland Indians.
Jackson has 22 home runs, 64 runs batted in and is hitting .269. Swindell is 13-3 with a 2.69 earned-run average in 21 starts.
Jackson, who went on the disabled list retroactive to Tuesday, suffered a pulled muscle in his left thigh June 24. The injury has bothered him since; he had not played since Saturday. Jackson’s roster spot was taken by outfielder Gary Thurman, who came off the disabled list.
Swindell left last Thursday’s game at Kansas City because of a sore left elbow. He then lost to the New York Yankees Tuesday night, giving up six hits and four runs in 3 1/3 innings.
The Indians called up right-handed pitcher Steve Olin from triple-A Colorado Springs to replace Swindell. The 23-year-old reliever led the Pacific Coast League with 23 saves and is 4-1 with a 3.33 ERA.
