Santa Monica : Permanent Water-Saving
The City Council voted to make permanent nearly all the temporary emergency water conservation measures that were adopted in June, 1988.
Although there is no longer a drought, which made the emergency measures necessary last year, city staff members said the rules “manage and preserve scarce water resources.”
Now permanent are bans on washing down driveways and patios, on watering lawns between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and on water not being served at restaurants unless requested.
However, lawns may now be watered every day rather than alternate days, and a ban on filling empty pools and spas has been removed.
The new ordinance would go into effect 30 days after the second reading, which is scheduled for Aug. 8.
