Council Extends Moratorium
The Redondo Beach City Council has extended a moratorium on demolition and construction permits for the 500 block of Garnet Street until Oct. 31. City officials said the street has the greatest number of historical homes in the city.
The three-month extension passed Thursday is the same as the original 45-day moratorium passed by the City Council in June and covers Garnet Street between South Francisca Street and South Guadalupe Avenue. The block has 17 single-story homes built between 1910 and 1928, said Redondo Beach associate planner Randy Burler.
The moratorium is the result of a petition drive by residents attempting to stop Tony Ballejos from tearing down a house on Garnet to build a 2,100-square-foot residence. Ballejos, who has rented the existing house to tenants, objected to the council’s decision, saying he has already taken a $175,000 construction loan for the project.
The council voted 4-0 to approve the extension. Councilwoman Kay Horrell was absent.
