Mitch Evans scored his first win in unlimited hydroplane racing by driving Cooper’s Express to the Columbia Cup championship over Miss Budweiser at Kennewick, Wash.
Evans, 28, was battling Mike Hanson, in Miss Mazda, for second place on the fourth of five laps when Tom D’Eath, in Miss Budweiser, cut in front of Miss Mazda. The spray temporarily knocked out Miss Mazda’s engine and resulted in a one-lap penalty for Miss Budweiser.
Cooper’s Express averaged 113.531 m.p.h. in the 10-mile race on the Columbia River. Miss Mazda was second, Miss Budweiser third.
