Helgeson Advances in Tennis

Ginger Helgeson of San Diego advanced to today’s third and final round of qualifying for the main draw of the Great American Bank tennis tournament at the San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club.

In Sunday’s second round, Helgeson defeated Stacey Martin of Lago, Md., 7-5, 6-4. She will play Andrea Holikova of Czechoslovakia today at 10 a.m. Holikova defeated Mary Lou Daniels of Chicago, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Today is the last day for players to qualify for main draw competition, which also begins at 10 a.m.

San Diego’s Robin White meets third-seeded Susan Sloane of Lexington, Ky., at 10 a.m. on center court. Top-seeded Steffi Graf meets Renee Simpson of Canada at 6:30 p.m, also on center court. After that match, eighth-seeded Ros Fairbank of Rancho Bernardo plays two-time defending San Diego Section champion Angelica Gavaldon of Coronado.

SOCCER

The under-19 boys’ La Jolla Nomads defeated Club Ohio of Columbus, Ohio, in overtime, 3-1, to win the McGuire Cup, the U.S Youth Soccer Assn.’s National Youth Competition in Long Island, N.Y.

After a scoreless first half at Mitchell Park, Club Ohio took a 1-0 lead five minutes into the second half. Michael Demco of the Nomads scored the tying goal on a free kick with 40 seconds left in regulation to force two 15-minute overtime periods. Steve Sigafosse scored for the Nomads in the first overtime and Chris Baer in the second.

GOLF

Three teams have advanced to the National Oldsmobile Championships after the Trevellyan Oldsmobile qualifying round at the Carmel Highland Country Club.

Two gross and one net team advance to sectional play, Sept. 1, at Singing Hills Golf Course.

In the gross division, John Fecko, Bryan Keuler, Roland Alexander and William Kramer finished with 61 on the par-72 course, and Augie Silveyra, Armando Gil, Jorge Escobedo and Harry Knodt finished with a 62.

In the net division, Chip Costello, Bob Costello, Bob Ambacher and Ernie Ambacher were the top finishers at 58.

VOLLEYBALL

San Diego State’s Mike Mattarocci had 10 kills for the South in the gold medal game of the U.S. Olympic Festival. The South defeated the West, 15-5, 15-8, 5-15, 15-8.
