Canada’s state-owned TV network launched a 24-hour all-news channel Monday after a two-year battle with Parliament. Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (CBC) President Pierre Juneau promised that the new cable service, called Newsworld, would provide “the opportunity to see our news as it unfolds.” Newsworld has a start-up budget of $17 million and a nationwide staff of 187. Conservative Parliament members, concerned about CBC’s dominance of broadcast news in Canada, demanded and won more private-sector involvement in the channel.
