PacifiCare Health Systems Inc. of Cypress reported that earnings for the quarter ended June 30 more than doubled, to $3.6 million from $1.5 million for the same period a year ago. Revenue for the third fiscal quarter rose 60%, to $182.3 million from $113.8 million. Terry Hartshorn, president and chief executive, said membership growth, revenues and net income reached record levels during the quarter. For the first nine months of fiscal 1989, earnings totaled $6.8 million, up 67% from the $4.1 million posted for the comparable period last year. Revenue increased 49%, to $466.1 million from $313.4 million. PacifiCare owns and operates health maintenance organizations in California, Oregon, Oklahoma and Texas, and an insurance subsidiary. The company also provides independent utilization review and preferred provider organization services.
