Sixteen inmates seized an Australian missionary and 13 other people as hostages during religious services at a jail in the Philippine city of Davao, police said. The convicts, who grabbed weapons from prison guards, demanded to meet with House Speaker Ramon Mitra, Sen. Santanina Rasul and the governor of Davao del Sur province, according to police. One police officer was wounded when the convicts later opened fire on a crowd gathered outside the jail, witnesses said. It was not immediately known what the convicts were seeking from the politicians. However, police said the convicts were from a group that seized several hostages in April to protest conditions at another prison.
