Anaheim : Man Arrested as Suspect in Hotel Theft Ring
Police arrested a Los Angeles man, whom they believe to be part of a theft ring operating in Southland hotels, after he allegedly tried to steal a woman’s purse in an Anaheim hotel.
A hotel security guard caught Tony Colon, 24, as he allegedly tried to flee the lobby of the Sheraton-Anaheim Hotel Wednesday morning, Police Sgt. Frank Van De Weerd said.
Police believe that the suspect is a member of a Colombian ring active in hotel thefts in Orange and Los Angeles counties. Van De Weerd said Colon had been convicted of a $1-million jewelry theft in Los Angeles County and is on parole in that case.
When police searched Colon’s two homes they recovered $40,000 in stolen property, including furs, jewelry and cameras, Van De Weerd said.
Bail was set at $25,000, and Colon remains in custody on suspicion of grand theft, police said.
Pat Trujillo, a 26-year-old woman, arrested at one of the houses, was also arrested on suspicion of grand theft, Van De Weerd said.
