Dave Chapin of Newport Beach, the second-place finisher in the 1988 Soling Class Olympic sailing trials in San Diego, was disqualified and suspended last year after testing positive for a banned substance.
The only official announcement of the positive testing was a brief item in the current monthly issue of American Sailor magazine, the official publication of the United States Yacht Racing Union. The test had been administered under the guidelines of the U.S. Olympic Committee. Chapin, skippering the three-man boat, was runner-up in the trials to John Kostecki of San Francisco, who later won the silver medal at Pusan, South Korea.
