Stating that a standardized contract could not possibly cover the varied relationships between individual theaters and playwrights, officials of The League of Resident Theatres made it clear Thursday that they will not use the new standard contract announced this week by the Dramatists Guild. The contract is for authors whose works are produced in nonprofit theaters. In a statement, the league said it will continue to negotiate individually with playwrights or their agents, adding that “the Dramatists Guild has no grounds to compel any type of collective bargaining as playwrights are not employees of the theaters where their plays are produced.”
