Security Pacific Will Make Some of Its ATMs Bilingual
Security Pacific National Bank said Thursday that it plans to make about 70 of its automated teller machines bilingual by the end of the year for its Spanish-speaking customers.
The Los Angeles-based company said it is the first major bank in California to install bilingual machines. Spanish-language ATMs, however, are in place in Texas and Arizona and at some small, Latino-oriented financial institutions in California, bank officials said.
Security Pacific has installed new software in six machines in Southern California so far, including one in Long Beach. The others are in the San Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino areas.
The bilingual machines will offer users a choice of making a transaction in Spanish or in English. Security Pacific has 939 ATMs, called ReadyTellers, in California.
James Lewin, a Security Pacific senior vice president, said the bank is considering changing other machines so they will serve speakers of other languages, including Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
