It’s a winning combination--sunshine, seasonable temperatures and three days to soak it all in. Labor Day weekend, summer’s last official hurrah, is here.

A high-pressure system moving in from Texas will restore San Diego to its more typical warm August weather, said National Weather Service forecaster Richard Stitt. After the morning clouds burn off, fair and seasonable conditions will prevail countywide through the long weekend, he said.

Highs at the beaches through Sunday will be 70 to 75 degrees. The ocean temperature is 68, and the surf is 2 to 3 feet.

Expecting Crowds at Beaches

Lifeguards are bracing for 150,000 people at San Diego beaches through the long weekend, according to city lifeguard Charlie Wright. More than 120 lifeguards will be on duty, he said.

Highs along the coast today will be in the mid-70s and warm several degrees by Monday, Stitt said. Overnight lows of 60 to 66 are expected tonight and Saturday.

Inland highs through the weekend will be in the mid- to upper 80s, gradually warming into the low 90s by Monday, Stitt said. Overnight lows will be 56 to 64 degrees.

The mountains will have fair skies and slightly warmer temperatures, with daytime highs of 72 to 80. Overnight lows will be in the mid-50s to the low 60s.

There will be a slight chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms in the desert beginning Sunday, Stitt said. Highs will be 104 to 112, and lows will be 68 to 76.

Aside from crowding at the beaches, one of the most hectic places in town will be Lindbergh Field, which is gearing up for its third-busiest travel holiday of the year. About 150,000 travelers are expected to pass through the airport between Friday and Monday, airport officials said.

To help alleviate airport parking and traffic, officials suggest travelers say goodby at home, rather than having friends or family take them to the passenger terminals. Travelers are also advised to use the “park and ride” lots near the airport, where free shuttles will take them to terminals.

Banks, post offices and libraries will be closed Monday. City, county and state offices will also observe the holiday.

Trash collection will be postponed one day through the week.
