Veteran Welfare Staffer to Manage Ronald McDonald House in Orange

Martha Winslow has been named house manager of the Orange County Ronald McDonald House in Orange, which will house families of children undergoing treatment for illnesses at Childrens Hospital of Orange County.

Winslow, who has worked nine years with the Orange County Welfare Department, will manage the day-to-day operations of the house, which will open this fall. She also will assist families staying there and recruit and train volunteers.

Winslow, born in Battle Creek, Mich., is active in a number of Orange County organizations. She has a degree in English from the University of Michigan.

Professional jugglers John Wee, 23, and Owen Morse, 22, of Tustin were named winners of the International Juggling Assn.’s team juggling competition held during the recent jugglers convention in Baltimore.

The Orange County duo won $500 and gold medals for its seven-minute routine performed to the music of television theme songs. About 1,000 jugglers took part in the convention.

The forensic team of Jennifer Huss of Irvine and Mike Berger of El Toro won first place in the novice division at the recent two-week Arizona Debate Institute at Arizona State University. More than 100 students from community colleges and universities participated in the event. Huss and Berger are members of the Irvine Valley College/Saddleback College forensics team.

Troy Ortale, 18, Jess Platts, 17, and Scott Schlesinger, 15, all of Fullerton and members of the Fullerton Police Department Explorer Scout Post, graduated from the Inland Empire Regional Law Enforcement Academy held at California Baptist College in Riverside.

They attended a 12-day, live-in program and received more than 200 hours of intensive law enforcement training that included criminal law and crime-scene investigation.

Capistrano Unified School District’s college and career planning center has been selected as one of the 100 most creative instructional programs in North America by a panel of educators from the American School Board Journal and the Executive Educator, two national education magazines.

The center provides free college and career guidance services for families of all students attending Capistrano Unified School District. It is funded with lottery money allocated by the state to school districts.

Charra DeMarco qof Irvine and Leland Smith of Garden Grove, both television-course students at Coastline Community College in Fountain Valley, have been awarded scholarships to study Italian at the University of Perguia in Italy. They will take part in an intensive study program during September.

The scholarship was presented to the two students by the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles.

Jennifer Glueck of Newport Beach will appear in the September issue of ‘Teen Magazine as a semifinalist in the Sportsgirl of the Year program, which seeks to find the all-around female athlete who also demonstrates leadership and good sportsmanship.

The winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship and be featured in the magazine’s February issue. About 10,000 entries were considered, according to a magazine spokeswoman.

The second-place winner will receive a $3,000 scholarship.

The West Orange County Board of Realtors presented $9,000 in tournament proceeds to Orangewood, a home for neglected and abused children, according to Bob Theemling of the realty group.

Dr. Sharon Kawai, medical director of rehabilitation Services at St. Jude Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in Fullerton, will receive the “Apple of Our Eye” award from the Dayle McIntosh Center for the Disabled at a ceremony Sept. 27 at the Doubletree Hotel in Orange.
