The State : Think Tank’s Chief Retires

W. Glenn Campbell, for 30 years the director of the influential Hoover Institution of War, Revolution and Peace--the conservative think tank affiliated with Stanford University--has retired as planned. It was announced in June that John Raisian, the institution’s deputy director, would take over as acting director for a year on Sept. 1. Campbell, 65, tripled the size of the Hoover Institution and fattened its endowments more than fiftyfold during his tenure. He had feuded with the university on the terms and timing of his retirement and he had battled with liberal members of the faculty who alleged that the institute’s political bent tainted the university. Campbell said he plans to write a book about his years at Hoover and will keep a close eye on the institution.
