The Minnesota Twins have reopened negotiations with relief ace Jeff Reardon that broke off in July, team Executive Vice President Andy MacPhail said.

Reardon had threatened to test the free agent market when the Twins declined to offer him a two-year guaranteed contract last spring. MacPhail said Thursday that the Twins are discussing a two-year guaranteed contract, believed to be worth between $3.1 million and $3.2 million.

“Quite frankly, we feel Jeff has earned our reconsideration,” MacPhail told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis.

“He’s three saves off the league leadership this season, and he seems to be almost a machine out there at times. Even the best relievers have off seasons periodically, and he seems immune. He’s imperturbable,” MacPhail said. Reardon, who notched his 28th save in Thursday night’s 8-6 victory over Texas, said he prefers to re-sign if both parties can agree on a guaranteed two-year pact.
