British Fans Go on Rampage in Sweden

Police arrested 116 British soccer fans who rampaged through downtown Stockholm Wednesday before a World Cup qualifying match.

Another 71 soccer fans, including four Britons, were arrested outside Rasunda Stadium during and after the game between Britain and Sweden, which ended in a 0-0 tie.

No incidents were reported inside the stadium.

British soccer clubs were banned from playing in European club competition after their fans were blamed for a 1986 riot-sparked stampede in Belgium that killed 39 spectators, mainly Italians.

The events in Stockholm could affect a decision made this year by the UEFA, the French-based European soccer clubs’ governing body, to readmit the British clubs next year if troublemakers are brought under control.
