Leave Wives Out of It

I was reading the Times’ recent article about men in television commercials (“Some Fuming, Few Surprised by Madison Avenue’s ‘Male Bashing’ Ads,” Aug. 8) and was upset that the writer and editors missed an error. You gave an example of an American Express ad that read “a loving man and wife giddily shop together . . . “ Whose wife is this man shopping with and why isn’t this wife shopping with her husband?

If you are angry at advertisers for making men look like idiots, why are you taking it out on wives?
