The United States and South Korea reached tentative agreement on a treaty to end South Korean harvesting of U.S.-origin salmon off the Northwest and Alaskan coasts. Similar drift-net treaties were negotiated earlier this year with Japan and Taiwan, whose fleets also fish in international waters in the North Pacific. A U.S. official said the treaties provide for a cooperative program to minimize catching of salmon spawned in the United States.
