A fire raged for six hours on Mackinac Island’s main street, killing two island employees, damaging a number of small stores and forcing authorities to close the popular Michigan tourist site. The victims were found in the rubble of The LaSalle, a three-story frame apartment building where island workers live, authorities said. The dead, two Michigan residents who work on the island, were identified as Michelle Ann Krizan, 21, of Kentwood, and Stephen Scott Kinney, 22, of Muskegon. Officials said that a preliminary investigation pointed to careless smoking. Firefighters and fire trucks were brought in from St. Ignace and Mackinaw City to supplement the two island fire trucks.
