THE SIDELINES : Clippers Fill Out Coaching Staff by Naming Staak, Roberts Assistants
The Los Angeles Clippers have filled Head Coach Don Casey’s staff by hiring Wake Forest Head Coach Bob Staak and retaining 1988-89 late-season appointee Joe Roberts as assistant coaches, the team said today.
Staak, previously the head coach at Xavier of Ohio, and Roberts, who joined the Clippers last Feb. 15, join Dave Twardzik on Casey’s staff. Twardzik was hired earlier this summer.
Staak, 41, spent the last 10 seasons as a college head coach--six at Xavier and the last four at Wake Forest.
Roberts, 53, was a co-captain on the 1960 Ohio State NCAA championship team.
Casey was named interim head coach last January when Gene Shue was fired. Earlier this summer, Casey was named permanent head coach.
The Clippers begin training camp Oct. 6 and open their preseason six days later against the Houston Rockets at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.
