Charlie Griffin; Former Mississippi Congressman
Former Rep. Charlie Griffin (D-Miss.), 63, who served almost 10 years as secretary of the Mississippi Senate before retiring July 1. Griffin had joined the staff of Rep. John Bell Williams in 1949. Williams returned to Mississippi and successfully ran for governor after he was deprived of his seniority in 1965 for supporting Republican candidates in the 1964 presidential elections. Griffin returned to Mississippi with him and was elected to the 4th District Congressional seat in 1968. In 1972, Griffin retired and started a career in banking, real estate and public relations before election to the Mississippi Senate in 1980. In Uttica, Miss., on Sunday of a heart attack.
